Azathioprine

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant – a drug that suppresses the function of the immune system. It forms part of the thiopurine class of drugs. Azathioprine is prescribed to prevent rejection following organ transplants, as well as to treat inflammatory diseases (such as certain bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, severe dermatitis and lupus erythematosus), hepatitis, the blood-clotting disorder ITP and serious forms of anaemia.

Azathioprine and the benefit of DNA analysis

The rate at which azathioprine is processed within your body varies from one individual to another. This means that the efficacy and side effects of azathioprine can be predicted to some extent on the basis of your genes. Preventive DNA analysis can therefore be an important tool in optimising your medication.
